Angry residents from Mwongori area in Nyamira on Thursday dug a road connecting the region with neighboring Mogusii accusing the county government of delaying to renovate it, several months after area MCA promised to fix the busy road.
Led by Mr Peter Kiage, the residents, most of them tea farmers, said the road was impassible making it difficult for them to transport farm produce to nearby markets.
They blamed the county government of sabotage and vowed to flash out officials from county government stationed at the region to collect taxes from Matatu and boda boda operators.
“Our MCA promised almost a year ago that the road will be fixed but nothing has since taken place. It’s really hectic for one to transport farm produce, which we depend on to markets from this region especially during the rainy period. We will soon chase away tax collectors from this region till our taxes are used for the intended purposes,” he said.
However, in a quick rejoinder over the phone, Mekenene MCA Alfayo Ngeresa slammed residents of being 'myopic' and called upon the police to arrest those responsible for destruction of a public property.
“I haven’t been to the region but I have gathered the information that some hooligans dug a road meant to serve the public. That act was myopic and I have called area chief and instructed him to arrest those responsible,” he said.
He said the county government had identified the contractor who is scheduled to commence the work before February and urged residents to give his leadership time to fix all roads that were in urgent need of repair.
