Gesima MCA Ken Nyameino has sharply differed with Nyamira Senator Mong’are Okong’o following the latter's proposal that the August 2017 elections date is not tenable.
Mong’are on Monday during an interview on NTV proposed that elections be pushed to another date probably December or even March.
And in an interview on Tuesday, Nyameino said the move would tamper with serious constitutional issues among them payment of elected officials.
“If the elections are pushed to December, it, therefore, means that the taxpayers’ money would be misused. Ordinary citizens will be forced to dig deep into their pockets to pay elected officials which should not be the case,” Nyameino said.
“I don’t see any difficulty in holding elections in August because the IEBC will be constituted soon. Such kinds of statements should not be encouraged. We are servants of the people and as representatives, we should uphold the constitution,” he said.
He said December elections could affect January opening of schools given a possible runoff that would interfere with the first term rather than the shorter third term in schools that could be affected after August.
