Ngewa MCA Karungo Thang'wa has questioned the method that chiefs are using to determine the number of bars a particular place should have.

Speaking to journalists at Ngewa shopping centre on Thursday, Karungo said the exercise is being conducted haphazardly and without including the views of the right people.

"I am in total support of reducing the number of licensed bars in my ward and the county in general. However, I am not pleased with the way the exercise is being handled by the chiefs,” said Thang'wa.

He added: "Chiefs are conducting small referenda where locals are supposed to decide the number of bars that should be in their area. But the people who are called to vote are minors, sellers and consumers of those brews. This is a total sham.”

The MCA said for the exercise to be fruitful, all stakeholders must be involved and people informed properly.

"This exercise actually belongs to the county government yet the chiefs are not even involving the MCAs. People must also be informed properly about the voting on media and other social platforms like churches so that they can know what they are supposed to do,” he said.
