Sigona ward MCA Mutonya Njenga has urged parents to watch how much money they give their children because of drugs and substance abuse epidemic in schools.

Njenga spoke on Monday during the ongoing Mutonya tournament; the MCA said that children given a lot of money end up committing petty crimes when they are broke and sometimes use the exact money to indulge into mischievous behavior drug substance being the major one.

“When children are used to money or they lack at one time or another, they end up getting other sources of acquiring money stealing being among the vice source,” Mwangi said.

He said that drugs and substance abuse have become rampant in institutions where students misuse drugs and that the cause behind it was usually having a lot of money to waste.

Njenga advocated parents to give just enough money for the child to survive in school since after all; a school was a place of learning and not luxury.

The lawmaker further warned the youths against committing petty crimes, and said that these crimes could be avoided if parents were vigilant and strict with their children.

He cautioned youths that the law would not relent on the matter. He said that those found involved in this unsavory behavior would be punished according to the law of Kenya.

Mutonya also said that cases of exam cheating might also be a reason for pocket money being misused in cases where a student is tempted to buy an examination leakage.
