A youth group from Mekenene ward in Borabu constituency has a reason to smile after area MCA on Tuesday donated a one hectare of land to be used to expand their banana growing business.

Mr Alfayo Ngeresa said Mekenene Youth Group has been leading by example by engaging in modern farming by persistently working with experts from other parts of the country.

Ngeresa lauded the 25member group and urged them to spearhead civic education in the region to have more young people joining modern farming other than depending on formal employment.

“When young people come together to initiate an idea, it’s important that they are appreciated. I am very pleased with the team and its continuous encouragement to the younger generation and I have decided to donate a piece of land for them to develop. This is the right way to go instead of depending on the formal business,” he said.

The KNC MCA further called on the Department of youth from the county government of Nyamira to make loans accessible to such groups to better farming and reduce the rates of unemployment.

“We have many youth groups in the county which should be aided to combat the unemployment rate. The ministry of youths should make the loans given to young entrepreneurs accessible,” he added.

Group Chairman Mr Erick Nyagaka welcomed the move by the MCA and promised to expand the farming for higher distribution to markets across the country.

“I am happy that we will be able to increase our productivity having acquired an extra land. We will be able to meet the high market demand of bananas in the local market,” he said.
