Mengere said that they have been receiving at least two cases every week of workers who were raped by their customers.

“There has also been increase in cases where they are beaten for wearing a condom whereas their customers do not want that. It is unfortunate that they end up being in hospital because they are seeking to protect themselves,” she added

She was speaking to the press at the Nakuru County Assembly Headquarters where she added that they would roll out a campaign to distribute female condoms and sensitize the workers on the importance of insisting on the contraceptives.

“We are also seeking to distribute sanitary towels to the women who are practicing in the area as we talk to them about issues regarding their safety and security. We intend to train them on the basic self defense skills and we have already gotten some of the volunteers seeking to train the willing ones how to protect themselves in case they are attacked,” she added

Mengere called on Kenyans to respect the women despite their work.

“They deserve to be treated with outmost respect and attacking and raping them is not okay,” she added
