Changamwe MCA Bernard Oguttu has launched a crackdown on drug users in the ward.According to Oguttu, the move is aimed at getting rid of drug addicts whom he said are tarnishing the ward’s image.The MCA together with women activists will visit different drug dens in the ward with the aim of flushing out drug users.Speaking to journalists on Monday after launching the operation, Oguttu said the drug users are to blame for the insecurity cases being reported in the area, and ordered them to vacate the ward.“We need a conducive environment for our children as we cannot bring up our kids in such an environment,” said Oguttu.The MCA said the crackdown will continue until all drug users in the ward are flashed out.“Several cases of insecurity have been reported with majority of our youth becoming unproductive due to the menace,” he added.Mary Akoth, a female activist in Changamwe supported the move, saying it will transform the ward.She said parents have been losing their children to drugs adding that it was time for the menace to be contained.“We are agitated when our children are raised in such a poor environment, we are taking charge to contain this social problem,” she said.Akoth also called for closure of chang’aa and mnazi dens in the area.Changamwe, Chaani, Wayani and Mwagosi wards in Changamwe Constituency are among the areas which experiencing a mushrooming of drug dens.
