Residents of Majengo in Thika took to the streets on Tuesday morning, after Thika police officers released alleged master minds of illicit liquor in the area.
Over the weekend, the police arrested over 60 people in Theri custody, after a two-day raid in the lower parts of Chania river, where they caught them in possession of over 2000 litres of the famous Chang’aa liquor.
On Monday morning, the suspects were to be arraigned in court, but in disbelief, the residents watched as the sellers and manufacturers of the liquor were released before being arraigned in court.
Following the incidence, area MCA Mwangi Wamwangi influenced the residents and took to the streets, faulting the police over corruption and unequal discharging of their powers.
Mwangi, who was informally dressed to an extent that he was unnoticeable, told the press that he has been pressuring and raising concern over the increased consumption of the liquor, but the police did nothing until over the weekend when he threatened to influence the residents of Majengo to protest and the police conducted a raid.
He said that the release of the liquor den owners is a down pull by the police in the fight against the illicit brew, and that he will not let them lead the people into dangers of being attacked by the illicit brew consumers again, who are said to be attacking business persons in the area at night.
He called on the immediate arrest of the men again and said he will stop when they will be charged in court.
