Former National Assembly deputy Speaker Farah Maalim should be appointed secretary general of the Orange Democratic Movement party, argues Nyamira County Assembly deputy majority leader James Matinga.
The seat was left vacant by Budalang'i MP Ababu Namwamba who cited frustrations by senior members as the major reason for his exit, and was replaced by nominated Senator Agnes Zani in an acting capacity.
But Matinga on Monday in an exclusive phone interview with this writer backed the former Lagdera lawmaker as an independent, strict and visionary man who could bring unity in ODM.
“I must start by lauding the great work done by Prof Anyang Nyong’o and now that he retired and someone was given the job and did absolutely nothing, the party leader should go for Farah because he is a proven leader,” he said.
“During his time as deputy speaker, I saw independence, strictness and vision in him the exact ingredients the former secretary general Ababu Namwamba lacked. Maalim is the right man for the job and I wish he will be appointed to take over,” he said.
Asked why he was uncomfortable with the nominated Senator Zani, Matinga said the party needed experienced people towards the general election to avoid fallouts.
“Zani is a good scholar whom I respect much but I think she is too soft and that could not be favourable as we head towards national elections. We need an experienced person like Maalim and the fact that he comes from a marginalized community, it would reduce complaints from among party supporters,” he added.
“I could have equally gone for Mohammed Junet (Suna east MP) but unfortunately he comes from Nyanza region so the issue of regional balance will arise,” Matinga said.
