Speaking at Nyabara Ibere on Monday when he paid a courtesy call to the area residents, Omanga said that the move intends to curb untimely death occasioned by people using weak foot bridges.

He said that many victims of such incidents were either drunken people who tried to cross rivers or little kids who accidentally miscalculated while crossing to the other sides of this rivers and subsequently drowns.

“I am aware that a number of people have died while crossing rivers during rainy season due to weak woody foot bridges. That is quite unfortunate because many of them were children and few drunkards. Such incidents should no longer be experienced since every life is important and we plan to construct stronger foot bridges in all those areas,” revealed Omanga.

The MCA said that construction of the said foot bridges in at least 15 areas, which according to him, have already been identified and will commence in March.

He said that Nyamira County leadership led by Governor John Nyagarama had subsidised the cost of constructing those foot bridges by disbursing Sh1 million in a project estimated to cost at least Sh1.5 Million.

“I would like to salute our county government for subsidising the cost of this project. We received Sh1 million from Governor Nyagarama and I am now sure that the project will not stall,” said Omanga.

He however, asked the area residents to take precautions when crossing flooded rivers especially during this rainy season to avoid more casualties.
