The Old Changamwe market will be reopened to enable youth and women to venture into small scale businesses, Changamwe MCA Bernard Oguttu has said.Addressing journalists on Monday, Oguttu said the market which closed during former Changamwe MP Ramadhan Seif Kajembe’s tenure will be renovated and re-opened soon.Oguttu said it is a shame that the market which used to house over 400 traders is now being used as a drug den.“We know our predecessor failed in providing employment opportunities for our women and youth in Changamwe. However, we will revive the market under our leadership,” said Oguttu. The MCA said he will hold meetings with the county leadership in a bid to convince them to fund the renovation project.“We are talking about enabling our mothers and our fellow youth earn a living and we should focus on reopening the market,” he added.Oguttu said if renovated, the market will uplift the living standards of youth and women in the area.He appealed to Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi to support him as he works towards creating employment opportunities for youth and women in the constituency. This barely two weeks after Oguttu led an operation to flush out drug users in the ward. The MCA also shut down drug dens in the area saying the move will help in curbing cases of insecurity.
