Nominated MCA Esther Mengere has raised a red flag over the increased cases of young children involved in child labour.
Mengere cited that most of the young children were forced into water vending and working in flower farms in Naivasha area.
“During the holidays we noted that many young boys have been overworked. Some of the girls have also been turned into house helps. We have seen very young boys on top of donkey carts selling water,” she said.
Mengere added, “This is not only dangerous for their health but it is also exposing the young boys to cash which might force them out of school when school opens.”
The MCA argued that this was also robbing the young kids of a normal childhood.
“Majority of the children who are working in flower farms do not even have Identity Cards (IDs). This means they are under aged and the work is too straining for them,” she added
She now wants the police to investigate the farms and fish them out.
“We are appealing to the police to look at the Human resource department and get out the children. They are not fully matured and cannot strain themselves with this,” she added.
Mengere also warned parents of such kids that they risked being arrested and jailed for forced labour.
