A Tana River MCA has been suspended from the assembly chambers after he was found guilty of grabbing the mace.
Garsen Central MCA Masha Boru was suspended by Tana River speaker Michael Justin Nkaduda on Wednesday for gross misconduct.
Mr. Boru will not attend sessions for one month after the House privilege committee found him guilty of violating Section 112 of the county assembly standing orders.
Two weeks ago, Mr. Boru, together with other opposition MCAs, disrupted business in the assembly in protest against the exclusion of some members during the debate on the composition of the county assembly service board.
According to the Star, Mr. Boru during the incident grabbed the mace which is the symbol of authority of an August House.
Speaker Nkaduda said Mr. Boru grabbed the mace and walked out with it in contravention of the standing orders.
“The House privilege committee gave Boru the opportunity to defend himself but did not. The member ignored an order of the committee which directed him to write an apology letter to the assembly for his gross misconduct,” said the speaker.
The ward representative, however, said that the suspension was too harsh and that it violated the standing orders.
“This is my first offense in the assembly. I should have been suspended for only four sittings according to section 115 of the standing orders,” he said.
