Biashara Ward Member of County Assembly Stephen Kuria has advised hawkers in Nakuru town to form groups and apply for Uwezo Fund and Women Enterprise Fund.
Speaking at the Wakulima market ton Thursday, Kuria said that majority of the hawkers are women and youth who are eligible to apply for government funding.
Kuria called on the hawkers to form small groups depending on the kind of business they engage in and apply for the funds.
“There is a misconception that Uwezo Fund and Women Enterprise Fund were meant for those women and youth who are jobless. Hawkers can also benefit from the funds and use the money to grow and expand your small businesses,” said Kuria.
He advised hawkers to think outside the box and also apply for loans from Saccos if they don’t succeed in getting government funding.
“I know the government funding might be limited but you can also talk to the many Saccos around which are willing to finance small scale traders as one way of growing your business,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the hawkers David Mwangi asked the MCA to table a motion in the county assembly asking the county government to offer loans to registered hawkers.
“We want you to go to the assembly and bring a motion which will ask the government to give us some small funding through the small groups we have,” said Mwangi.
