Nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) Esther Magere has pledged to provide reusable sanitary towels to more than 200 schools come next school term.
Magere who is also a social worker, said that one of her project’s aims is to reach school girls who could not access the normal sanitary towels. Magere’s project majorly deals with making of reusable sanitary towels.
“We have heard cases of young girls being sent away from schools just because they ‘leaked’ on themselves just because they could not afford sanitary towels. Many of them do not return to school claiming that they would be mocked by their fellow male students in class and this disrupts the school pattern,” noted Magere.
She was speaking to the Press in Naivasha where she revealed that they were targeting schools in Maela, Gilgil, Molo, Kuresoi and Mai Mahiu.
“Renewable sanitary towels which they will be able to wash and reuse when they experience their menstrual period, will help gilrs maintain their hygiene and ensure that their self-confidence is not killed in the process,” added Magere.
Magere also acknowledged that she had been approached by various ladies who asked her for the towels. “This is a long term solution and at the end of the day it’s cheaper than having to buy towels anytime they are on periods,” said Magere.
