Kiliweheri MCA Bashir Ibrahim has said that they will move to court to sue the Britsh government following the death of five children in Mandera County.
The five children died on Thursday when a grenade they were playing with exploded in Banisa sub-county, Mandera.
Aged between 12 and 17 years, the children were allegedly playing with the object not knowing the danger it posed.
Bashir accused former British soldiers of failing to dispose of their training equipment in a manner that will not endanger lives of residents in the region.
He said many lives in the region have been lost due to such weapons being left behind without proper disposal.
“It is unfortunate that the colonial masters left behind these dangerous objects that continue to kill our people and living many others either disabled or with permanent marks.”
“We have had enough of this and as a community, we will be moving to court to sue the British government and demand for compensation,” said the MCA.
Deputy county commissioner Mathias Chishambo who confirmed the incident said the children were playing with the grenade that they had found in a grazing field.
Chisambo said the incident happened at around 6 pm while they were grazing their cattle adding that the children had crossed over to Ethiopia in search of water and pasture.
“They picked up the device on Wednesday and played with it until it exploded on Thursday evening. I can confirm that they are all Kenyans contrary to earlier reports that some might be Ethiopians,” Chisambo said as quoted by the Star.
