Kisumu Nominated MCA Farida Salim has called on the lakeside city residents to be fair on women rape victims.
The county representative noted that witnesses and residents are normally unfair to the rape victims, violating the victims’ rights in the process.
Speaking to this writer at the county assembly on Wednesday, Farida said that most residents normally blame the rape victims after rape cases.
“Why is it that whenever a rape case occurs, many people twist it to suggest that it is the woman to blame?” she asked.
The legislator said that this has really helped the perpetrators go scot free, and in most cases, they never get punished.
She said that this causes the victims, who are majorly women, to continue living in frustration and trauma throughout their lives.
“Why should we frustrate the women in the society like this even when we have modern and current constitution that protects all Kenyans equally, irrespective of gender, race or religion? she added.
“Some of these women are our mothers, sisters, cousins and even wives and daughters. We have to strive as a population to bring back sanity in the society and protect the women and our children,” said the MCA.
At the same time, Salim asked the police to take stern actions against rape perpetrators.
This comes a few days after rape allegations surfaced against two MPs, who have been accused of rape.
