Menengai Ward MCA James Macharia has petitioned the county government to identify land and build a dumpsite in the area to promote sanitation as well as youth employment.
The MCA noted that the larger Nakuru-East region, which is experiencing a high rate of population increase due to migration in the area and business developments, lack a dumpsite, a fact that has highly increased sanitation challenges.
The MCA was addressing traders on Wednesday at Keratina market centre along Nakuru-Nairobi highway after inspecting construction work of a market that is sponsored by the Ward Development Fund.
“This area is experiencing an increased population because the expanding Nakuru town is moving towards east. Many residential quarters and business centres are coming up. It means we need to check on our sanitation by allocating a space for dumping waste materials,” said Macharia.
“If we don’t then we risk the health of our people. Such a project will also provide employment to our youths,’’ added the MCA.
Macharia further observed that many residents and business people dump waste materials on roads and drainage passages, a fact that does not warrant good sanitation and health measures, and promised to mobilize his colleagues in Nkuru- East to petition the county government or the Ward Development Committee to buy land for a dumping site to serve most parts of the region.
