Chewelle MCA Harun Hassan is now calling on Tana River County executive to liase with the Garissa Water and Sewerage Company (GAWASCO) to coordinate water connection fees at monthly flat rates in all urban centers.
Speaking in Garissa town on Wednesday, Hassan criticised the Tana River Water and Sewerage Company for imposing charges to Madogo residents, figures amounting to Sh10,200 as a connection fees and another Sh1,700 as monthly flat rate charge.
The charges only apply to Madogo area even as neighboring estates pay Sh2,500 for connection and Sh500 monthly charges.
The MCA further issued that Tawasco should have apparently reduced the charges just immediately it took over the services from Garissa Water and Sewerage Company last year.
He said the payments are illegal and the county Budget and Finance committee will ensure the levies are harmonized.
“Water is very basic and residents should be charged moderately. It is a big shame for Kenyans to be connected to electricity, yet they do not have access to clean water," he said.
