Members of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly on Thursday voted to adjourn sittings for ten days ahead of the October 26 repeat presidential elections.
The leader of majority Josphat Lowoi while moving the motion said the short recess will enable members campaign for their various parties.
Uasin Gishu County Assembly is dominated by the Jubilee party with only one of the 30 elected Ward representatives being from the opposition's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
“Presidential election is only a week ahead and we expect political activities to be heightened ahead of the election day. It will be good that we adjourn our settings so that we can campaign for our candidate at the grassroots,” said Mr. Lowoi who is the Karuna Mibeki MCA.
“This adjournment will also give us the opportunity to meet the electorate and know what they want us to address while at the assembly since some of us never got an opportunity to meet them after they were elected in the August 8 poll,” he added.
Assembly's majority Chief Whip David Sing'oei seconded the motion reiterating the need for the MCA's to be engaged in the campaigns before the polls.
“We are aware some people are saying there will be no elections but for us, we believe the election will go on as planned and we need to go to our respective wards to rally support for President Uhuru Kenyatta,” said the Ng'enyilel MCA.
Majority of the MCAs who contributed to the motion supported it.The Assembly will now resume sittings on Tuesday, October 30th at 2.30pm.
