Kisumu MCAs have slammed government over the use of excess force in dealing with Cord protesters during Monday's nationwide protests by the opposition to remove the IEBC commissioners from office.
In a statement, the MCAs said what the government did was wrong and was only meant to cow them in their pursuit to have the poll body reconstituted in readiness for 2017 election.
They further claimed that the action was against democracy.
Kondele Ward MCA Gabriel Ochieng' said the government decision to employ high-handed tactics in handling the protesters was not good for a country that came from politically instigated violence seven years ago.
"What is wrong if people protest peacefully? The protests have never been violent ever since we started. What the protesters are asking for is the immediate disbandment of this poll body which cannot be trusted to handle the 2017 poll," said Mr Ochieng.
His sentiment was echoed by his Kolwa Central Ward counterpart Okoth Kelvin Odhiambo who said the use of force in handling protesters by the government is a sign of a regime that is not ready to listen to any dissenting voices.
Mr Odhiambo wondered how democracy can be nurtured in an atmosphere of intimidation.
This happens even as the leaders declare that the protesters were not tired and are willing to return to the streets until their grievances are heard and addressed conclusively.
