Machakos county ward representatives have criticized a speech by the county governor Alfred Mutua which he made during the official opening of the assembly on Monday.

During his speech, governor Mutua made several promises including provision of iron sheets to residents in a bid to do away with grass thatched houses.

However, his pledges seemed not to be appealing to some of the MCAs.

Mua ward MCA Francis Ngunga criticized the governors promise to say they are empty pledges which will not end poverty.

"Provision of iron sheets to our people won't help end poverty. The governor should instead promise something that will see our people get rich not giving them building materials," said Ngunga.

Ngunga noted that Mutua is taking the county as a private business where he decides on what to do instead of doing what will benefit all the residents of the county.

Mutua was first elected in 2013 on a Wiper party ticket before he parted ways with the party and formed his own party Maendeleo Chap Chap.

He was re-elected on the MCC party ticket in the August 8 polls.
