Members of the County Assembly in Kisumu differed on Thursday whether they deserved to go for an 18-day recess.
This was after Majority Leader Malin Olero tabled a Motion seeking adjournment so that MCAs could go rest and meet their electorate after a long working period from February.
West Kisumu Ward representative Paul Okiri however, opposed the move saying it was only in February when the Assembly resumed after a long recess from last year and therefore there was no need for another at this particular time.
“We have not even done much since we resumed last month to warrant resting,” said Okiri amidst jeers and countless point of orders from his counterparts.
He stated that there were very pertinent issues that the house needed to discussion and that an 18-day recess will only delay such debates.
Manyatta B Ward representative Nereah Okombo said there are gazetted timelines which stipulate periods which members go for recess and that they must be adhered to.
“Some of us just fear going back to the electorate because they are not performing well, we deserve a rest,” said Okombo.
Kisumu North Ward Representative however sought for assurance from the speaker of the day Elijah Omondi that the Assembly can be recalled anytime to discuss pertinent issues.
Omondi confirmed that in deed the house will go on recess to allow members go back to their wards and spend time with the electorate.
