A section of leaders in Garissa County have opposed the ongoing county government’s crackdown on illegal structures in Garissa Town.

The leaders who opposed the move said land is an emotive issue that needs to be handled with care adding that residents need to be consulted before they are evicted from their lands.

Led by Galbet MCA Abdirizack Ismail, whose area has been affected criticized the move by the county government to evict residents on ring road land.

Mr. Ismail said the government should involve the stakeholders and owners who have occupied the land for the past several years before repossessing it.

The MCA said land is an emotive subject and residents occupying the land should be engaged adding that forceful eviction might result in conflicts.

“If the government wants to repossess this land then let them involve the stakeholders and owners who have occupied the land for the past several years.”

“It’s not possible for any government to just wake up and start destroying structures without consultation,” he said when addressing a press conference at the county assembly.

Mr. Ismail, however, said he is not against planning by the county government but urged that various stakeholders and the residents should be involved in the matter before the county repossesses the land.

“I directly appeal to the governor to intervene because force can't work because people will resist if anything is done without consulting them,” he added.
