MCA’s in Mandera most of whom are former teachers are now taking up the responsibility of tutoring students in the county.

The county assembly speaker Abdikadir Sheikh Hassan pointed out that the move is primarily aimed at covering for the non-local teachers that have since refused to go back to the area.

Hassan stated that the county MCA’s have divided themselves in groups with some teaching primary schools while the others handle secondary schools.

“The county assembly held a meeting and concluded that as a resolution we should begin with 10 to 15 professional teachers in the assembly, then other steps will follow,” he said

He further added that the situation, however unfortunate it is, is understandable for the teachers that could not return, owing it to factors such as insecurity, hardship especially caused by the hot weather.

He however said that it is not right for the, to claim mistreatment by the locals, saying that it is an opportunistic way to blackmail the government.

He said more than 90 per cent of security officers in Mandera are from outside and therefore and cannot allow the teachers to be mistreated.

He called for the government to devolve education so that the county can hire teachers locally.
