Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) shocked the joint parliamentary select committee on electoral reforms after they said they want to serve up to March 4 2018.
The MCAs said if the election is held on August 2017, they will be disadvantaged by serving eight months less.
The proposal was sharply criticized by Members of Parliament accusing MCAs of being selfish.
Appearing before the committee on Tuesday, Makueni County speaker Stephen Ngelu, representing the County Assemblies Forum, said MCAs in the 47 county assemblies and their speakers have moved to court seeking a review of the next general election.
Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr told Ngelu whether County Assemblies are aware that there was a caveat that those elected on March 2013 would serve with eight months less.
“The date of the next election when it was set before the 2013 election by an advisory opinion sought by the attorney general there was a caveat that all persons serving after the 2013 election would serve for a period less eight months. Are you aware?” Mutula said.
Mutula challenged Ngelu whether the proposal was a way for MCAs to pay themselves for the eight months in advance.
