The members said this would improve food production within the county as most food consumed is imported from neighbouring counties.

The recommendations were according to a report by Committee on Livestock, Fisheries and Natural Resources on the 6th All African Conference on Animal Agriculture held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.

While tabling the report in the assembly yesterday, committee chairperson Fanuel Aim said farmers should be encouraged to adapt new and modern technologies in farming notably animal agriculture, poultry among others.

“The approaches to be adapted are not susceptible to climate change, do not require a lot of capital as start-ups and basically have high returns on investments,” he said.

The chairman however called upon county government to identify investors to build fish processing and storage facilities within the county.

Aim said setting up storage facilities so that food will last long enough to get to markets is a crucial issue that needs to be addressed.

He said this is necessitated by the fact that fish is processed outside the county thereby a loss of revenue and access to the product by middlemen.

“This will enable farmers fetch good prices for their perishable commodities,” said the committee chairman.
