Uasin Gishu County Assembly has passed a motion urging the county government to ensure all urban centers and pre-urban centres across the county are installed with streetlights.

This is in what Members of the County Assembly said will help not only to  enhance the county's economy, but also cut down on criminal activities.

While moving the motion, Ziwa MCA Joseph Korir noted that provision of street lights was part of the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP).

"We appreciate the fact that Eldoret town and major urban centres has streets lights but we want this extended to other centres so as to help boost economy by enhancing 24-hour economy," noted the MCA.

"Lack of street lights in some of the areas has also resulted in criminal activities like thuggery and businesses broken into but with their installing such incidences with automatically come down," he added.

Alice Rono, a nominated MCA seconded the motion saying installation of street lights in other urban centres will help improve locals livelihoods who depend on business to earn a living.

"We want to enhance 24-hour economy and for this to be achieved even the countryside with small shopping centres should have the street lights," said Moiben MCA Noah Kemboi.

Eldoret town and it's environs benefited from the National government's lighting project dubbed 'Mwangaza Mtaani' that saw installation of the street lights in major streets, estates and roads around the town.
