Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has said the members of his county assembly who voted to have Raila Odinga’s people’s assembly resigned. The governor, who supported the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta in last year’s polls, said his Maendeleo Chap Chap party will seek to be enjoyed in a case by Attorney General Githu Muigai about the legality of the people’s assemblies. “We will ask the court to declare that all MCAs who unconstitutionally voted for the people’s assemblies to have automatically resigned,” the governor wrote on his Facebook page. A number of opposition-controlled counties, including Machakos, have passed motions supporting the formation of people’s assemblies. The governor argued that the MCAs had surrounded their roles back to the people, and cannot continue holding office.“Elected leaders cannot turn around and by their own vote, surrender their role to the people and then continue to serve in office,” he said.
