The media council has called for the arrest of police officers involved in the alleged assault of Standard journalist Isaiah Gwengi.

The Bondo correspondent is said to have been assaulted by police and arrested near Usenge town, Siaya county, on Wednesday night.

It is alleged that he incited the public through his articles.

Charles Kerich, Media Council of Kenya chairman, said the case will be followed up until justice is achieved.

"This is unacceptable. As we head to the election brutality will not be condoned...the duo reported early in the year that their lives were in danger," Kerich said.

He lauded IG Joseph Boinnet for taking quick action after the council brought the matter to his attention on Thursday morning.

But he added: "That should not be the end. Police officers attached to the QRT must face the full force of the law."
