Kisii University Chaplain Father Lawrence Nyaanga says that increased alcohol brewing and consumption in Kisii and other parts of the country are because of meagre fines against offenders.
Speaking on Wednesday at Kisii University during a drug abuse awareness workshop, Father Nyaanga challenged the judiciary to look into the fines and increase it so that offenders can feel the pinch and abandon the activity.
“How can you expect to reduce or end alcohol business in the community if you fine an offender just Sh4,000 yet they can make up to to Sh50,000 from the business venture?” questioned the Catholic cleric.
“The judiciary must increase the fines so that offenders can leave the venture. This is the only way we can win the war against the alcohol business,” he suggested.
Father Nyaanga called on the provincial administration to support them in the fight against the social-spiritual ills in the community.
“We lack enough support from the chiefs and their assistants in the fight against the alcohol business in the community. However, some cooperate and we are working together but a section of them are usually involved in corruption, which becomes an obstacle in our efforts of uprooting the practice in the community,” complained the chaplaincy.
The cleric advised those engaged in the business to have an alternative way of income generation and avert from the alcohol business.
He noted they are working with church leaders from other denomination in the war against chang’aa and other abused drugs in the community.
