Businessmen in Nyamira town, who operate one of the main slaughterhouses in the region, are counting loses after county health officials ordered their premises closed for failing to meet standards.
The health workers also confiscated the meat at the premises where at least 80kg of meat was set to be destroyed for health reasons.
The abattoir, which is situated along the Nyamira-Nyabite Road, was supposed to be closed down by September 13, 2014 under similar circumstances before the traders resolved the issues raised with health officials.
A trader said an agreement reached between the county health officials and the meat vendors when they held a joint meeting over the issue resolved they continue with their business and wondered why they were ambushed without notice.
“We agreed with the abattoir operator and the businessmen that they operate until the agreed date whereby it could be closed permanently,” David Oyaro, a public health officer said.
The officers wondered why it was still operational a move that prompted their swift action to confiscate the meat and destroy it.
According to Oyaro, the meat from the slaughter house could cause health problems to unsuspecting clients due to poor hygienic standards at the facility.
The facility lacked water, latrines and the general cleanliness was not adhered to.
The public has a right to access of clean and safe food and the environment should always be clean to avoid any contamination.
The officials vowed to continue supervising other areas in the county to ensure that sanitation is maintained for good health to the residents.
