The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has strongly condemned an attack on a Standard newspaper journalist by police officers.

Isaiah Gwengi alongside Usenge-based human rights defender Rodgers Ochieng were arrested near Usenge town, Siaya county, where they were allegedly assaulted by seven Administration Police (AP) officers over allegations of incitement.

The Siaya-based journalist suffered hand, neck and waist injuries.

MCK chairman Charles Kerich raised concern over the issue saying justice should be served.

“Police brutality on journalists is unacceptable especially in the run-up to the general election,” said Kerich.

“The duo had on February reported to the Bondo DCIO that their lives were in danger,” he added.

Kerich applauded the Inspector General of police Joseph Boinnet for reacting quickly when the council brought the matter to his attention, Thursday morning.

“That should not be the end. Police officers attached to the QRT must face the full force of the law,” he noted during a press briefing, Thursday.
