The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has announced measures aimed at sanitizing the industry.

The move comes barely a week after MCK chief executive officer David Omwoyo expressed concern over the recent wave of attacks on journalists.

He termed the attacks as worrying.

Calling on stakeholders to join the course, Omwoyo said there is need for stakeholders to strategise on how to protect journalists from intimidation and threats while at the same time eliminating quacks who have infiltrated the industry.

Speaking on Wednesday, Omwoyo said the Council is working with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) to develop National Mechanisms for Safety of Journalists.

The framework is aimed at preventing crimes against journalists and seek to prosecute perpetrators.
