A two-time MP has slammed the media for conveniently misreporting information that MPs refused to accept a pay cut from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

Sirisia MP elect John Waluke on Wednesday said MPs simply asked the commission to retain whatever they had been earning earlier and engage them should they resort to reducing it as it had recommended.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing induction exercise for parliamentarians ahead of their swearing in,the two-time legislator faulted the media for blowing the issue out of proportion by claiming that MPs had refused to accept a pay cut thus earning them disrepute among Kenyans.

"The media misreported the whole thing. All we asked for was for the SRC to retain whatever we've been earning and to only subject it to reduction upon consultations with us", he said.

About a week ago Homa Bay county woman representative Gladys Wanga and her Kiambu counterpart Gathoni wa Muchomba blasted the Sarah Serem-led commission for electing to reduce MPs salary and termed the move a ploy to demean and reduce legislators to beggars.

The Jubilee MP also claimed that plans are afoot to table legislations that will scrap off monthly earnings for the SRC staff.
