Thika West NCA coordinator Isaiah Achini, speaking in his Thika office on Thursday said that many Thika residents rarely take seriously the NCA's warning to vacate condemned buildings.

"The media has got a role of enlightening the public about the dangers of staying in a structure that we have deemed unfit for occupancy if we want to avert tragedy like that of Huruma," said Achini.

He added: "The media can also help us in informing the public about the condemned building and where they are so that tenants can make wise decisions."

Achini warned landlords who allow ignorant tenants to enter condemned buildings saying it is illegal and they risk arrest. He also cautioned those who paint walls of condemned houses to hide the NCA 'X' mark saying a strict action will be taken against them.

"We will not tolerate anyone who continues to flaunt NCA regulations because we will arrest and arraign them in court in accordance with the law," he said.

Tenants were also asked to be asking their landlords for the occupancy certificates as a way of ensuring that they settle in safe structures.
