Media Owners Association has thrown its weight behind electronic voting and transmission, a move that has already created sharp division among religious groups.
Despite the Inter-Faith religious groups supporting manual alternative voting, SUPKEM, organization allied to Islamic faith had suggested that the current limbo to be solved through dialogue among political groups.
In its submission through Royal Media Owners S.K. Macharia, the Association contends that the electoral body could still use Satellite phones in poor network coverage areas.
“Since 1992, we the media houses have been monitoring elections from the polling stations. That is very possible and it can be done by using satellite phones which transmits results directly to main headquarters,” he said.
“We have several electronic backups especially if BVR kits fails. I don’t think IEBC can cease registering voters incase thee is a problem at the registration centre. They can still improvise a technologically based gadget,” he added.
MOA’s stand reflects what the opposition team has been pushing for following a move by National Assembly to alter Election Laws, paving way for manual voting and transmission methods in 2017 elections.
