The Kenyan media has been given a stern warning by the government against publishing information that will lead to incitement.
The government said that it will take stern action against media houses that do so.
“Although the press has a watchdog role to play, journalists and media owners must safeguard against abuse of the spectrum to threaten our national security, undermine moral values and violate freedom of others,” said Joe Mucheru the ICT CS.
Mucheru stated that the media should strive to unite Kenyans together as the 2017 elections near.
“I urge media owners to employ professionals with knowledge of media laws and ethics to minimise situations where some individuals abuse the power of the pen to advance personal agenda,” he said.
The CS said that as long as the media practices responsible journalism then Kenyans will have no reason to turn against each other.
“The media should also hold to account the political leadership. Their statements and character must be scrutinised to ensure those seeking elective positions are the right choice for the electorate,” he said.
The CS spoke of this on Friday at Nyeri during the launch of Gukena 92.8FM.
