Medical officers in Kikuyu sub-county have been warned against selling the free cholera vaccines provided by the government. Speaking from his office today, Kikuyu OCPD Mutune Maweu said he had received complaints that medics in the area were selling the vaccine to members of the public.
The OCPD stated that it was a crime to oppress the public by selling free government property for personal benefits.
He stated that those medics found engaging in this crime will be arrested and charged in accordance to the law. The police boss explained that such a crime was a serious offence as those vaccines are meant to help the public curb the spread of cholera.
He said that every member in the sub-county should get the vaccine for free.
He urged area residents to report any medical officer found charging people for the vaccine to the nearest police station for action to be taken against them.
“All medics in the sub-county should ensure that they give the vaccines for free as the government had stated .Those trying to enrich themselves by deceiving members of the public will be arrested and charged accordingly,” said Maweu. Albert Haduba, a resident in the area, said that some medical officers were charging Sh100 for the vaccine. “We were told to get the vaccines for free but when you visit some of these clinics, they tell you to pay for the vaccine. However some people can’t afford to pay hence end up going back home without taking the vaccine,” said Haduba.
