South Rift Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary Samuel Oroko has called on the Nakuru County government to absorb health workers contracted under the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP).
Oroko said that 200 health workers have been on contract since 2011 and they are yet to be employed on permanent terms.
“The county government should employ the 200 nurses on permanent terms to avoid confrontation,” said Oroko.
Speaking on Tuesday at Nakuru Town to the affected staffs, Oroko said that the county government should haste the process to ensure the nurses enjoy the benefits of permanent health staffs.
“Currently, the 200 health workers do not enjoy the benefits of permanently employed staffs and we want the county government to absorb the workers so that they can be entitled the benefits,” said Oroko.
He added that the county government should address the issues of health workers to avoid a healthcare crisis.
“The county government should hold consultations with players in the healthcare sector to avoid unnecessary strikes which are triggered by the county’s lack of addressing the healthcare situation,” said Oroko.
He further urged the county government to allocate more funds to the healthcare sector to enable it cope with ever increasing population.
