Chief Justice David Maraga who doubles as the President of the Supreme Court is a man who is on a hot seat.
It must be hard to be a Chief Justice in Kenya right now, what with the ruling party writing to you letters warning you of being bias? What with the executive blatantly ignoring court orders?
David Maraga went down in history when he, on September 1st, 2017, legally rendered the re-election of Uhuru Kenyatta null and void and ordered another election to be conducted within the constitutionally mandated 60 days.
But in the legal corridor, Chief justice David Maraga was not the first to make history in Kenya.
A Kamba politician going by the name Kitili Maluki Mwendwa went down in history as the first African Chief Justice of independent Kenya.
The Daily Nation of August 5, 2013 described him as the “man who had the shortest time in service as CJ.” Maluki served as the CJ of Kenya for only three years from July 3, 1968 to 1971. By the time he was appointed Chief Justice of Kenya, he was only 39, again making history as the youngest CJ to ever serve the country. He was accused of a plot to overthrow Kenyatta’s government. This accusation made him to resign as the Chief Justice before the completion of his term.
According to www.wikipedia.com, Kitili Maluki Mwendwa also vied for and won the Kitui Central MP seat before succumbing to a road accident in 1985.
