Walter Odum is a Kisumu-based newspaper vendor working with Standard Media Group.
Mr. Odum has been selling newspapers in Kisumu for the past 50 years and says he is not ready to resign anytime soon.
This is because the old man is eyeing to be in the Guinness book of record as the longest serving newspaper vendor in the world.
Mr. Odum started selling newspapers in the year 1968 when he was still a teenager.
"During that time we used to earn only 12 cents as commission. If you could be able to sell 5 newspapers then you had one newspaper as commission.
"Back then Standard Newspaper was being distributed by someone called Patel while Nation was being distributed by Abdul," he narrates.
The newspaper vendor who is a resident of Manyatta village in Kisumu has been depending on selling newspapers as a source of income he has been using to raise his family as narrates her daughter.
"Despite the little amount he was earning he could manage to take us to school up to secondary level," said Beryl Atieno, a daughter.
His services are valued by most of his customers who have been depending on him for newspapers.
"His services are very good because since I come from around here even over the weekend I send him a newspaper to bring me home," said one of his loyal customers.
The old man is not planning to retire anytime soon despite having been on the streets of Kisumu for 5 decades distributing newspapers. According to him, he will only retire upon landing his name in the Guinness Book of Record.
"I want to make a record of Guinness book of record that am the longest selling newspaper vendor in the world may be I think. I think in Kenya nobody has the record of 50 years," says Mr. Odum.
