In order to survive in the university, students have to think of ways of making ends meet.
Not everyone is lucky to come from a well off family, something that has forced many to indulge in different activities to sustain their stay.
As much as you may come from a wealthy family, the university environment requires one to have that extra cash, otherwise university life will be hectic for you.
Jack Ombati, a Business Management student is the ladies' darling in the university. Versed with great skills in the beauty industry, he has developed a mobile saloon moving from one hostel to another.
Surprisingly he also attends to the gentlemen in the university.
Ombati indulges in pedicures and manicures, and his services are widely sort as he attends to his clients in their respective rooms. Who would not like that?
Ombati, from a humble family background says he had to improvise ways of surviving in the university and that is when he sort to indulge in the beauty industry.
Armed with one bottle of ‘cutex’ he started hawking his services moving from room to room sometimes doing voluntary work to win favours from the students.
He says patience has been his greatest virtue and as a result seen him grow his business.
“I started hawking my services from room to room and most of my friends laughed at me making fun but I never gave up. Now I sit in my room and receive requests from the students who want to be attended to,” he says.
He adds that he is a marketable guy now, but it is not an easy job.
“It is a challenging job because you have to picture in mind what one actually wants and sometimes what your picture isn’t what one wants and especially the fact that university students are very fixed on what they actually want, but I have learnt a virtue of controlling my tongue and it has given me much favour from the students,” he adds.
“I also attend to the male students. Today even the men do their nails and adds up to my income. Everyone wants to look great now days,” he says.
“I make up to Sh900-1000 on a good day and say Sh400 on a bad day. I charge Sh100 for every manicure and pedicure,” he says.
The students like Ombati and find him really skilled.
“Everyone knows Ombati's skills and I can’t be attended to by any other person. The fact that he is a male adds advantage since he does his work well without jealousy unlike other women at the saloon,” Says Grace Satya.
Jack hopes to grow his business in the coming years.
