Meet Winnie Pasaka Otieno, former housegirl who has beaten all odds to become a mechanic.
What is strange is that she never even went to school for it; she learnt all the basics from home and now works at one of the garages along Jogoo Road.
With her income, her siblings and mother are all depending on her as she is the family's main breadwinner.
Whereas other Nairobi girls want to use their time receiving money and visiting salons, most of Winnie's time is spent underneath heavy vehicles.
She does not wait to be given cash unless from a client.
“I have been here for one year now after dropping out of school in form two over school fees and family problems in 2015,” Pasaka says.
“My three siblings and I were raised by our mother after dad passed on in 2010.”
She learnt the trade in Mombasa where she worked as a house help after she dropped out of school.
“I would work from morning till 9am then go to the nearby garage, to observe. But with time I learnt the ropes,” she adds.
We can all learn a thing from Winnie and add more fire into our hustles as we try to make a living in this city.
