Kisumu County has a total of 35 wards, which means 35 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) were elected during last year’s general elections.
Among the 35 elected members is David Arao, the Railways ward MCA. Arao is not just your normal Ward Rep; he is also a Pastor. To most of his supporters, the religious leader comes first followed by the politician.
“I am a Pastor and a member of the Kingdom Restoration Church. I have my senior Pastor there. Even on Sunday I was in Church preaching,” says Arao.
Mr. Arao was elected on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket after defeating over ten opponents.
He noted that he decided to join politics after realizing that for a very long time, Christians have been left behind by the government in terms of initiating development projects aimed at uplifting their lives.
“Most of the times, Christians are in church, they do not even know what is happening for example on matters to do with public participation and bursaries’ distribution. We see politicians going to churches during campaigns but you will never see them again after being elected,” he said.
He said that his intention is to push the agenda of God in leadership. “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked rule, the people mourn,” he quoted Proverbs 29:2.
