Patrick Mwangi, a retired banker, has now taken up a task to ensure street families in Nakuru are catered for.

Mwangi, who began the work more than 25 years ago, said entities must join hands to save street families.

He  now runs Global Hope Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre based in Nakuru’s Bahati sub-county.

He urges the government to work with other partners to solve the issue of street families.

“I think the biggest issue in our town today is street families and it is high time the county government steps in to work closely with these homes and other partners to help solve the problem,” he said.

He started to help kids back in 1984 when he took in a kid who lost parents.

The centre he runs has over 26 children picked from the streets and are now being taken through behavior change programs.

“We also have parents who have failed in their responsibility hence contributing to the rising cases of street families in urban centres. Let the parents play their role,” he said.

Similar sentiments echoed by Margaret Wanjiku Kihara who works at the centre.

Margaret says if the Government can step in to support more homes then the issue of street families shall come to an end.

They also want the government to handle the issue seriously.
