Ilhan Omar has entered the books of America’s history after she was elected the first Somali American Muslim woman legislator in Minnesota.
The 33-year old former Kenyan refugee defied all odds to clinch a seat in a state where Somali refugees have suffered in the hands of American natives for long.
Omar election comes amidst President elect Donald Trump’s threat to deport all immigrants living in the United States of America illegally.
Her victory will be remembered by many since it comes at a time when Americans showed the whole world that they are not ready to have a woman as the President.
"Even though his message is supposed to function as a fear element in making sure that we don't vote, so we don't see ourselves as part of the American system, it's had the opposite effect," Omar told AFP about Trump, as quoted by the Daily Nation.
The race to the White House between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton was like a clash of the Titans.
Although Clinton lost the elections, she managed to defeat Trump in the state of Minnesota by scooping most of the votes.
Omar’s election has changed the way Somali refugees are looked at in the entire world.
