The county has always been dominated by men owing to cultural believes among the Kalenjin community that a woman cannot lead a man.One lady has, however, emerged as the top female politician in the county battling men in the past three general elections.Prof. Margaret Kamar joined politics in 2008 when she was elected Member of Parliament for the then Eldoret East constituency on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.In 2013, she went against the political tide in the region and vied for the Uasin Gishu gubernatorial seat on an ODM ticket but lost Jackson Mandago who was the United Republican Party (URP) candidate.The renowned Professor made a comeback in the 2017 election where she contested for the Uasin Gishu Senatorial seat on a Jubilee party ticket and won with a huge margin.She has also served the country in various Cabinet positions among them the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology from 2011 to 2013.Prior to joining politics she was a professor of soil science at Moi University and also worked with various international organisations as a consultant.
