With no political experience, Okoth Obado make a huge plunge into politics during the 2013 general elections, and surprisingly, he was vying for the gubernatorial seat in Migori County.
No one gave him a chance against seasoned politicians with big war chests, but armed with his impressive record during his tenure as Kenya Sugar Board Chief, the Kenyatta University trained teacher gave it a try.
His first task was to bag the ODM party ticket. His hopes were dashed when his bitter rival Prof. Edward Oyugi was declared the winner of an exercise which Obado is believed to have won.
He never lost hope. He quickly decamped to little-known People's Democratic Party and pulled one of the biggest surprises in Nyanza politics when he trounced the favourite, Prof Oyugi, in the March 2013 poll.
By so doing, he became the only non-ODM Governor in the entire Nyanza region. With no known political friends, Obado who holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration had done the unthinkable.
Ahead of 2017 poll, he rejoined ODM and to prove his doubters wrong, he once again trounced longtime Opposition leader Raila Odinga's ally and former Cabinet Minister Ochillo Ayacko to bag the party ticket. He confirmed that he is the 'King' of Migori when he defeated the former Rongo MP during the August 8 poll.
With his tenure coming to an end in 2022, it remains to be seen what the 'triumphant lone-ranger's' next political move will be.
Whether he hangs his political boots will be another thing. But politically speaking, he has confirmed that he is a self-made politician.
