To many matatu passengers in the city of Nairobi, music mixes are a common scene when travelling in and out of the city.
DJ Demakufu, is a name that resonates with many matatu passengers given that his mixes play in many city matatus, for many DJs matatus have been key in forming foundations in their careers, from the likes of DJ Lyta and DJ Kalonje who used them as their platforms to greatness.
DJ Demakufu who hails from Dandora started his career in 2012 but since he did not have the equipment or the right connections, he decided to engage in menial jobs at the Nairobi industrial area, before his father saw his Dj passion and bought him a mixer.
Demakufu's stage name was actually DJ Firstborn when he joined the industry but when he was supposed to record his drop to use in his mixes, the guy who was to do it said 'Demakufu' instead of 'Dj Firstborn' and from that point, he adopted the name since it sounded unique.
His mixes are now heard in matatus plying the Rongai, Kayole, Dandora, Githurai and Umoja routes.
Demakufu, however, says that celebrity status attracts a lot of scrutiny from the public but he has mastered the art of handling what is thrown his way, especially from ladies. His advice to the upcoming DJs is that they should not let their fame be another element of their life.
His next big move is to create a bigger fan base outside of Kenya and beyond.
